Designs that Inspire – Contemporary Tuscan Master Bedroom

Tuscan vernacular, inspired by Tuscany (Toscana), Italy, fourteenth century architecture, has been around for many years in the U.S. and has proven to be timeless.  However, with the trend toward clean, simple lines, the Tuscan vernacular has faced a dilemma, as it is anything but clean and simple.

To address the trend and modernize the Tuscan vernacular, our design department has worked diligently to marry the Tuscan and Contemporary styles, as shown in the Master Bedroom here (and below).  How did we accomplish this?

Notice the first thing to go was the dark, heavy plaster wall finish.  In its place are lighter finishes, more updated, and a combination of walls with nothing but smooth texture and paint, along with the lighter finished walls.  Next, notice the stone on the wall.  It is a small cut natural stone laid in a straight pattern and kept low to keep from overwhelming the space.  Finally, notice the large full arch custom-made window and door system by Jeld-Wen.  It captures the beautiful golf course view while adding the familiar arch to the space.  In this room, we even arched the ceiling and added the striations to update and highlight the arch.  We love that this space feels updated and clean but still maintains the warmth and welcoming feel that defines the Tuscan vernacular.  One more detail that has nothing to do with Tuscan vernacular is the LED-lit stairs leading to the Master Bath.  These are motion-activated to provide safety and convenience to the homeowners, in keeping with our Healthy Home Standard©.  That is the real beauty of the modern custom home, after all–it should capture all of the inspiration of years gone by combined with all of the modern conveniences of today’s custom home!
